SMA Crown Confidential Notebook - Note: Citi Sky

Occasion: Citi has announced Citi Sky, an AI advisor for Citigold clients built with Google DeepMind — real-time voice and video, always-on, framed as “an AI-powered member of the Citi Wealth team,” rolling out summer 2026. The position occasioned: on the client’s side of the table.

This week Citi announced Citi Sky, an AI advisor for its Citigold clients, built with Google DeepMind: real-time voice and video conversations about their finances, always on, framed as “an AI-powered member of the Citi Wealth team.” It is set to roll out over the summer.

The capability is real and will only improve. What is worth sitting with is not the capability but the word “member.” Member of which team?

Citi is careful to say Citi Sky will not replace advisors, and holds no transactional authority — it directs clients toward their advisors. We take that at face value. The point is not what the tool is permitted to do. It is which way it faces. An AI built by an institution — trained on its data, deployed through its infrastructure, accountable to its shareholders — is that institution’s intelligence. Its warmth, its availability, its apparent attentiveness do not change the direction it faces. It faces the institution. It cannot face otherwise; it was formed there.

This is not a question of Citi’s intent. It may intend, sincerely, to serve its clients well. The point is structural. The question of whose intelligence is in the room — whose interests it was built to serve, whose picture of the client it holds — is a question of origin, not of good faith.

At SMA Crown Confidential, we begin with a different formation. The Bespoke AI Confidante is built from one person’s depth: their history with what they hold, the questions they keep returning to, the kind of steward they intend to be. That formation determines whose side of the table it occupies. Not as an aspiration, but as a structural fact.

The institution is not the enemy. It is the counterparty. The distinction matters most when both intelligences are in the room at once — one framed as a member of the team, and one that was formed from the client whose team it actually is.
