Occasion: Capgemini’s World Wealth Report shows the ultra-high-net-worth population growing faster than the wealth below it and capturing the largest share of recent gains — while only seventeen percent of HNWIs describe their advisory experience as “seamless and personalised,” despite widespread AI investment across the sector. The position occasioned: architectural origin — the difference between an instrument of depth and a platform of breadth.
This week’s finance sector data makes an interesting pair. The ultra-high-net-worth population grew faster than the wealth below it this year, and captured the largest share of the gains — a population that is, by every measure, the sector’s priority. And yet, in the same report, only seventeen percent of HNWIs describe their experience with their bank or wealth manager as “seamless and personalised.”
It is worth sitting with that gap rather than rushing past it. This is not a population that institutions are neglecting — quite the opposite. Personalisation is, by every account, the stated objective of the AI investment now underway across private banking and wealth platforms. The investment is real, the intent is sincere, and still the gap persists.
What we think the gap reflects is not a shortfall of effort but a question of formation. A platform serves many clients; whatever it builds, however adaptive, is built from the pattern of many and fitted back to one. That is not a failure of execution — it is what a platform is. Personalisation built this way can be responsive, even impressively so, without ever being formed around the person it is responding to.
The Bespoke AI Confidante of the SMA Crown Confidential is built the other way. It is formed from the depth of one person — their history with what they hold, the questions they keep returning to — rather than from the breadth of many. We hold the person, not the portfolio. This is not a richer version of what the platforms are building. It is a different instrument, and the seventeen percent figure is, if anything, a description of the distance between the two.
